Organized
by the Church, Cáritas’ mission is to stimulate charity and justice, so that
people’s property can be put to praiseworthy , concrete actions, specially in
order to help the needy, and thus foster their development and growth. Cáritas
has branches in more than 190 countries, through the 143 members in Cáritas
International. In Latin America and the Caribbean, it can be found in 22
countries, operating in four areas: the South Cone, Bolivarianos, Centroamérica
and the Caribbean. In keeping with the task of preaching and spreading the
Gospel, Charitable Pastoral is the contribution made by the Church as from the
Gospel so as to create a fairer community. From that role, the Church commits
itself to Protect Humanity and supports those people in search of their
dignity through daily work and
effort, stressing the spirit of solidarity and justice among brothers and
sisters, acting in the light of the Gospel. In general terms, Charity is love.
Thus, Cáritas’ mission is to
irradiate charity, being in instrument of the Church to help make man free. To work for the “culture of
solidarity” is its goal. Cáritas’
methodology is the stimulation, the appeal to people, an invitation to
join in the always urgent cause of solidarity. It starts within the religious
community and spreads to the community at large. Caritas acts like a teacher, it
works for those families that cannot support their children, it helps the
ill who are not taken care of. Caritas’
programmes aim at showing social injustice, and summon people to help the needy,
because changing a society, both at an economic, political and social level, and
crystallising solid changes is not an individual but a group task. The type of
charity sought is not that of alms.
