Konex 1993. A medical doctor;
graduated at the University of La Plata (1949). Dr Favaloro travelled to
the USA to improve his knowledge of cardiology. Specialized in thoracic and
cardiovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He devoted himself to
research and successfully developed both in Argentina and USA a surgical
technique for myocardial revascularization known as “bypass”. Thanks to this
technique, an artificial duct is prepared to substitute for a clogged artery,
thus normalizing the blood irrigation of the heart. He immediately became famous
for his contribution to medical science. He returned to Argentina in 1971.
Became Head Professor Extraordinary of Cardiac Surgery at Universidad del
Salvador, Honorary Advisor of the Fifth Surgery Chair at the School of Medicine,
UBA (1983); Head of the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery at
Fundación Favaloro, an Active and Honorary Member of twenty- four and forty
medical associations respectively, as well as Honorary Professor and Doctor
Honoris Causa of 10 national and foreign universities. He was also a Member of
the National Academy of Medicine, the Academy of Science and Medicine of Brazil.
Among his many works, the following stand out: “Surgical
Treatment of Coronary Arteriosclerosis” (1970), “Recuerdos de un médico rural”
(1980); “Conoce usted a San Martín” (1987); “La Memoria de Guayaquil” (1991),
“De La Pampa a los Estados Unidos” (1992). In 1983, he founded the Laboratory
for Basic Research of the Department of Research and Teaching at Favaloro
Foundation where he carried out important research. Among his distinctions and
awards, some of the most remarkable are: Gold Medal Ohio State Medical
Association, First Prize (1970), Gold Medal offered by Sociedad Argentina de
Cardiología (1978), Award of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation “Distinguished
Alumnus Award” (1987), “The Gairdner Foundation International Award” (1987),
“Premio Rene Leriche” offered by
Sociedad Internacional de Cirugía, “Golden Plate granted by the American
Academy of Achievement (EEUU,1993). Some other remarkable achievements after
getting the Diamond Konex Award are: Since 1993, he was Founder and Active Member of the Sociedad de
Cardiocirujanos de España. He published the following books: “Don Pedro y la
Educación” (1994), “Comments on Coronary Artery By Pass Grafting” (1994);
“Current Status of Coronary Artery By Pass Graft” (CABG). He received more
prizes and awards. He published over
500 papers on cardiology.
